SPROUT SOUP

Sprouts are a vegetable that you love or hate.  There are many stories about having to put the sprouts on in October so that they will be ready for the Christmas Dinner.

Sprouts are not only for Christmas.  Below is a delicious recipe using this much maligned vegetable that provides a tasty alternative to 'fish on Fridays.'

1lb sprouts
1 medium onion
1 knorr vegetable stock pot
1pint of water (boiling)
2 tablespoons olive oil
3½oz crème fraiche
salt and pepper
nutmeg

Chop the onion, trim and half the sprouts

Gently fry the onion in the oil until it begins to
soften then add the sprouts.
Cover and fry on gentle heat for 4-5 mins,
stirring occasionally

Add 1pt of boiling water and the stock pot
Cook on gentle heat until sprouts are tender

Blend the mixture using liquidiser or hand blender
till smooth.  Allow to cool slightly

stir in the crème fraiche
and return to heat until piping hot.
Season to taste with salt, pepper and nutmeg.

FATHER ALOSZA

As you know Father Alosza returned to his mission in Kazakhstan shortly after Christmas.  He returned at winter time to a temperature of minus 30 degrees.

The other day when everyone was complaining how cold it was and hoping the snow didn't last too long I sent him the picture at the top of this post to show that we we had some snow in England.

He responded with ' tak my też mamy' - yes we have some [snow] too.  He then sent the following pictures.

The snow and ice around the locks on the INSIDE of the door

Ice forming - again on the INSIDE of the door

The snow and ice on the outside of the house

Please continue to keep Father in your prayers.  Dealing with these extreme weather conditions cannot be easy when you are well.  It must be even more difficult for Father with his poor health too.

RISING DAMP

For a long time we have been plagued with damp in the tower and choir loft at St Marie's.  When I first reported the problem to the diocese I was informed that we need to 'keep our eye on it.'  This we have been doing for a long time now and over the passage of time we have seen it get worse.

It has now come to the stage where 'keeping our eye on it' is not a viable option and work needs to be undertaken urgently.  Several parishioners have written and phoned the diocese to express their concerns.  I am grateful to them not only for helping me get some movement on this issue but also for their patience in emptying buckets and trying to make the place look presentable for Sunday Mass, Funerals and Baptisms.

It now finally it appears something is being done.

I post a few photos so that you can see the extent of the damaged caused because work was not undertaken before now.
